Muga and Sierra Cantabria come to the East Village
If, like me, you had neither funds nor the foresight to attend the New York Wine Experience this weekend, you can get a taste of it at Tinto Fino in the East Village on Saturday, when the classy little Spanish-only wine shop hosts a “Meet and Taste” with Manuel Muga of Bodegas Muga and Jose Manuel Azofra of Sierra Cantabria, representatives of two key Rioja bodegas pouring their wines live and in person.
The free tasting, which will include producers from other Spanish bodegas, is a collaboration between Tinto Fino, owned by Mani Dawes, and Kerin Auth of Tempranillo, Inc., exclusive New York area distributor for the wines imported by Jorge Ordonez, a major figure behind America’s recent love affair with Spanish wines.
Ms. Dawes, who is also a partner at New York restaurants Tia Pol and El Qunito Pino, and Ms. Auth are two of the most knowledgeable, passionate, and eloquent lovers of all things Spanish you’ll ever encounter, and they’ve been that way for a long time. They were country, to borrow from Barbara Mandrell and George Jones, when country wasn’t cool.
Be sure to call ahead to reserve a space. It’s a tiny shop and space is bound to be quite limited.
