As much as I admire ladies’ footwear, I don’t normally have epiphanies in women’s shoe stores. Maybe it was the altitude.

Last weekend, on a brief trip to North Carolina’s High Country, I found myself idling in a shop called Monkee’s of Blowing Rock while Violeta and her mom weighed the relative merits of two pairs of leather boots. Sonny’s, a local breakfast-and-lunch-only diner renowned for its slammin’ ham biscuit, was closed for the day, and a persistent misty rain made outdoor lounging unappealing, so I settled onto a designed-with-men-in-mind leather couch at Monkee’s and searched for reading material.

Before long I found a copy of this month’s Men’s Vogue and an artcile written by Lawrence Osborne called “Final Harvest: A new ruling challenges the traditions of Spain’s premier wine region. Could time be running out for white Rioja?”
