Self-Portrait (with Wine Shop)

Ribera de Curtidores, Madrid, Spain, June 3, 2006. I found this alluring, and nicely reflective, wine shop storefront while on an exploration of my old neighborhood, Embajadores, due south of the city center, a few years ago.  On a street famous for its inexpensive knick-knacks—on Sundays, Curtidores is home to the sprawling flea market called El Rastro—it was a bit of a surprise to find such a nicely appointed wine shop selling high-end bottlings. In retrospect, it was just another example of the contrasts that abound on just about any street in any of the country’s major cities.
