In Search of Bacchus, a travelogue released by Simon & Schuster in October, is not a melodramatically narrated quest for a lost shroud attributed to the Greek god of wine or a hokey look into any other supernatural phenomena. (Anyone remember “In Search of…“, the TV show from the late 1970s narrated by Leonard Nimoy? Used to scare me silly).
No, instead, George M. Taber’s handsome tome, subtitled Wanderings in the World of Wine Tourism, is what looks to be a welcome addition to the bibliography of wine travel.
I just came across a reference to this book today, so I don’t own it yet, but if the heavily excised but nevertheless illuminating chapter on Rioja, viewable as part a Google BOOKS preview, offers any clue, then my initial impression is that the book is not only well researched and written, it’s also up-to-date, full of insightful observations on both wine and architecture, and loaded with tons of backstory.
